Linear Street Career Mod Released for NBA 2K14 PC

I have released a beta version of a ‘linear’ street career mod for NBA 2K14 PC. Rather than simply reskinning the NBA game, this mod goes a bit further by trying to replicate the career or story modes seen in the NBA Street console games. When loaded, you are given a 29 game season against generic and NBA players that progressively become more difficult. When you win a game, you can trade away one of your players for someone on the team you just beat. For an added challenge, you can trade away your best player for the winning team’s worst player after a loss. This is all dependent on an honor system of course.

The mod features the Street Uniforms created by our own bigh0rt, and uses many of the Street Courts I have created the past few years. You can try the mod yourself by heading over to the Forum Thread, and for more information, as well as a glimpse of the mod’s gameplay, check out the Mod Review video below. I hope you enjoy!

NLSC Podcast – Episode #68

It’s that time of the week again. Join Arcane, JaoSming and myself for Episode #68 of the NLSC Podcast, where we recap the 2014 NBA trade deadline, discuss its impact on this year’s video games, talk about a new(ish) modding breakthrough and more.

  • The trade deadline has come and gone. NBA 2K14′s rosters have been updated, but NBA Live 14′s have not. We talk about the issues with NBA Live 14′s roster updates and reflect on EA’s good track record with NBA Live 09 and NBA Live 10.
  • What are some of the  features that we miss from previous NBA Live and NBA 2K titles? When do we think we’ll see some of them again, if ever?
  • On a similar note, today’s games are fully featured, but are they truly deep, well-rounded and varied experiences?
  • JaoSming talks a little about a new update for NBA 2K14 that actually modifies the game’s animations.
  • We run down all of the deadline trades and commiserate our ill-fated predictions. Also, is being bought out the new “dealt at the deadline”?
  • Raymond Felton adds to the New York Knicks’ embarrassment this season.
  • Bill Simmons was allowed to call last week’s Boston Celtics/Los Angeles Lakers game. It was far more entertaining than the game itself.
  • We wrap up the episode with a couple of other news items from around the NBA.

Let us know what you thought of this week’s show along with your take on any of the topics that we discussed, either in the comments below or here in the Forum. Topic suggestions and mailbag questions/comments are also welcome in this thread.

Dumb Fact Monday: NBA 2K14 Patching

This is Dumb Fact Monday, serving up random facts about basketball video games that you may or may not find interesting.

I take pride in how our yearly tutorials forum takes shape each year, but this year I feel I have slacked off by not updating many resources for NBA 2K14. Instead of writing a Dumb Fact Monday article, I spent the time I set aside for this article updating the File Structure Resource; which is key for understanding what each file’s purpose is within NBA 2K14. Grouped with my extensive Video Tutorial Thread and the other great Tutorials we have in our forums, I think anyone should be able to jump into NBA 2K14 modding with a decent knowledge base to reference. If you have any basic or advanced patching questions, please make a new thread in our Patching Help & Requests Forum after checking out these resources.

If you are not looking to get into NBA 2K14 patching and just wanted a dumb fact for the week, I apologize. Check back next week for a proper entry for this series.

The Tuesday Triple: NLSC Patching Resources

$

0

This is The Tuesday Triple, where I attempt to break down random topics into three points, and maybe an “and one” if I need it. Similar to the established Friday Five by Andrew, the topics will be related to basketball video games and their communities as a whole.

Yesterday I spent time updating some of the NBA 2K14 resources and tutorials instead of writing my weekly Dumb Fact Monday. To follow up, I wanted to feature the resources we all have available to us at the NLSC for patching; not just for NBA 2K games, but for the NBA Live series on PC as well. Like I said in yesterday’s article, I take pride in the detailed nature of the tutorials and resources available here in our community. So click to read more to learn more about the resources anyone can use to customize their NBA game of choice.

NLSC Tutorial Forums

Free Throw – Tutorial Subforums

A fairly obvious choice to lead off with, but that is the purpose of having a ‘free throw’ entry. If you are looking to modify a specific basketball game, one of the best places to get started is in our Forums. Check out the main forum for that game, then check the tutorials subforum within it. Every game from NBA Live 2003 to NBA 2K14 has its own tutorials subforum.

One thing to takeaway from our annual basketball games is the, sometimes, lack of major changes from year-to-year. On PC this usually means tutorials can remain relevant for years after they are written. Most of these are case-by-case, but I can state the 2K10 method of recoloring paint on courts still works for NBA 2K14. Further, some of the DBF and FSH editing tools work for all of the NBA Live PC games. Since these are a part of the forums, you can always reply and ask about specific tutorials applying to different versions of the game to be sure. Yet, as long as you backup your original files, there is nothing wrong with experimenting with an old tutorial and reporting the results yourself.

NLSC Downloads Resources

Circus Shot – Resource Downloads & Others’ Patches

Sometimes the easiest way to learn how to do something is by looking at someone else’s released patch. A recent example of this is how I became curious of the gameplay changes bigh0rt was able to accomplish in the March Madness 2K14 mod. While I also contacted him asking about it, I loaded up his roster to see what he had changed, and noticed drastic changes to the coaching profiles. After some experimentation, I was able to get faster-paced and isolation based gameplay into my recent Street mods.

I want to remind you that we do have pretty strict rules against patch stealing (i.e. slightly modifying someone else’s work and re-releasing it), but no one can claim ownership of a technique as long as you do the work. Referencing the modified files of a released mod may be the easiest way to learn new techniques. On top of that, we do have a Resources Download Section specifically for headshots or other resources to help all patchers.

NLSC Wiki

Three Pointer – The NLSC Wiki

Currently the NLSC Wiki is more useful for those patching NBA Live PC games than NBA 2K games, but it still provides a very useful resource for information on past, and current NBA 2K games. I have personally used it many times to reference the retro challenges in NBA 2K12 and NBA 2K11, while also brushing up on some DBF editing if I need to do something in a Live PC game.

The beauty of the Wiki is that, well, it is a Wiki and can be easily updated or improved upon. Andrew has done an exemplary job keeping information in the Wiki updated while constantly adding new information to it, and I will again promise to add my own knowledge to the Wiki as I encourage others to as well.

I hope you find these resources as useful as I do. If you feel I missed something, let me know in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

The Friday Five: 5 Tips for Patchers

$

0

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Friday Five! This is a feature that I post every Friday in which I give my thoughts on a topic that’s related to basketball video games, the real NBA or another area of interest to our community, either as a list of five items or in the form of a Top 5 countdown.

Earlier in the week, JaoSming spent some time updating and spotlighting our many patching resources. Given an opportunity to keep a theme running through our features this week – the latest Top 10 Plays and Podcast also exhibit and discuss patching respectively – I thought that for this week’s Friday Five, I’d offer a few general tips on patching, mostly for people who are looking to get started.

For as long as the NLSC has been around, our community has been making patches for NBA Live and in more recent years, NBA 2K as well. We have a talented and resourceful patching community that helps one another through detailed tutorials and general advice, but for those just getting into patching, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Hopefully, these five tips will give you an idea of what’s required and how to start out on the right foot.

1. Brush up your computer skills

NBA Street 2K13 by JaoSming

Patching certainly doesn’t require a degree in computer science, nor does it require any programming knowledge (unless of course, you’re trying to develop a patching tool). However, it does require a fair amount of computer literacy. If you’re reasonably proficient at using office software, browsing the Internet, managing your saved files and other such tasks, you should be able to learn how to use the appropriate patching tools and follow the steps laid out in tutorials fairly easily.

However, if the process of finding files and folders on your hard drive seems daunting, if you’re confused by the process of installing software, or if anything beyond the most basic computer tasks is confusing, then patching isn’t for you. Not yet, at any rate. Simply put, if locating and opening a file that needs to be edited proves to be a confusing step in a tutorial, then you need to develop a little more computer savvy before you start patching.

2. Read (or watch) the tutorials…carefully

JaoSming's NBA 2K Court & Arena Video Tutorial

As JaoSming mentioned earlier this week, over the years we’ve amassed some handy tutorials and resources that explain how to update and modify various aspects of NBA Live and NBA 2K. As a community, we create and preserve these resources so that patching information is easier to find, while also avoiding the need to type up detailed explanations every time someone new wants to try their hand at patching.

When using a tutorial, make sure that you follow every step. When a new patcher complains that a tutorial isn’t helpful or doesn’t work, quite often they’ve skimmed it and thus missed an important step or detail that is vital to the process. Of course, sometimes tutorials are missing key information or could stand to be clearer on certain points, in which case you should absolutely ask follow up questions about the steps you’re having trouble with. Just make sure you’ve taken in all the information in the tutorial first, in case there’s a crucial point that you’re neglecting.

3. Ask the right people for help (and be polite!)

JaoSming's Midnight Ballers for NBA 2K13 PC

As a general rule of thumb, if someone has never released the type of patch you’re interested in creating, they’re probably not the person to teach you how to make it. In other words, if you want to create your own jersey, ask someone who’s actually making and releasing jersey updates. Don’t ask for tips, tricks and tutorials from someone who doesn’t make them, just because they happen to be online…or the webmaster/administrator. Sorry, but if it’s outside my area of knowledge and expertise, all I can do is advise you to browse the tutorials or ask someone else.

The tutorials are naturally a good place to start, but if you do need some extra help and you’re not sure who to ask, I’d advise replying in a relevant tutorial thread or simply posting a new thread with an open appeal to anyone in the community that can help. No matter how (or whom) you ask for help though, be polite and respectful towards your fellow community members. If you pester someone, flood their inbox because they don’t get back to you right away, or are flat out rude or insulting to someone who has tried to be helpful, you’ll find that people are less inclined to offer their assistance.

4. Explore and experiment

Chicago Bulls Practice Court for NBA Live 08

A good tutorial will help you create patches, but some self-education and an understanding of the files that you’re editing also goes a long way. Intuition is a helpful trait when it comes to patching, as is a willingness to experiment. After all, that’s how the processes and techniques for patching came about in the first place; someone had to discover how it was all done.

For example…when I decided to try my hand at something a little different and make some practice courts for NBA Live, I not only referred to JaoSming’s excellent tutorial, but also explored the court files and noted which textures were what, and how they were used in the game. That gave me an idea of what to change and manipulate, to get the results I wanted. Likewise, I compiled the NBA Live DBF Editing Guides after I had familiarised myself with the databases and the different values for the fields, experimenting where necessary to see the in-game effects. As long as you’ve got a backup of the file handy, you can tinker as much as you’d like.

5. Learn the process, then refine the technique

New NBA 2K13 Gym by JaoSming

Everyone wants to make quality patches, especially if they’re sharing them with the community. After all, great work is inspiring, and our community produces some truly fantastic updates for NBA Live and NBA 2K. When you’re starting out however, it’s more important that you learn the basics and master the steps for creating a patch, then improve your technique once you know what you’re doing. To draw comparisons to basketball itself, you first learn how to dribble and keep the ball under control before you develop an ankle-breaking crossover.

Be patient and persevere. Some types of patches are more complicated to create than others, but all benefit from practice and experience. Once you know the basic steps to successfully change what you want to change, you can focus on the quality. Whether it’s a deeper understanding of ratings and attributes, better cropping or some other manipulation of a texture, practice and experience will hone your knowledge and technique. And when you’re finished and satisfied with the outcome, why not share your work with the community in our Downloads section?

That’s all for this week. Patchers, what other advice would you give to people starting out? If you’re new to patching, what kind of advice would be helpful to you? Sound off in the comments below and feel free to take the discussion to the NLSC Forum. Thanks for checking in, please join me again next Friday for another Five.

Preview of RED MC iff Editing

I have been beta testing the iff editing functionality of RED MC for Vl@d Zola Jr. and created a thread to preview some of the amazing things we will be able to accomplish, once RED MC is updated with this new functionality. There is no specific time set for release, but already this tool allows for some very cool modding options. So far I have been able to import a street arena into a normal arena, add crowds to the normally empty practice court, import the folding tables from the 60′s Celtics court into the modern arenas, and increase the resolution of nearly every texture I load in the tool. So not only will this tool allow for texture resolutions that surpass what we are seeing in NBA Live 14 and NBA 2K14 on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but we will be able to more unique and original mods that have not been possible in this community since NBA Live PC games.

You can check out the screenshots and ask questions in this Forum Thread. When RED MC is updated with iff editing functionality, we will run another news item here on the main page.

NBA Street 2K14 Mod Released

Another PC simulation basketball game, another streetball mod created by myself. It seems like clockwork but I have been distracted in my street mod endeavors by trying to get too fancy or taking on too much work to be worth it. So I have gone back to the basics and focused on gameplay edits (inspired by NCAA and NBA Jam artist bigh0rt) to drastically change the simulation gameplay to a 3 chucking, slam dunking, over dribbling, and no help defense playing game of NBA 2K14. On top of that, any player I found that had a nickname in Basketball-Reference‘s database got a 20% boost in ratings, because street. To get it out to you as soon as possible I used last year’s mod’s street uniforms and premade street courts. Once RED MC’s iff editing is released, I will update the download with already completed updates to the courts and 3 new ones, including a conversion of 2K11′s Blacktop Mode court.

I hope you enjoy the mod as much as I have. You can get it from the NLSC Downloads Database and be sure to check the Forum Thread for additional previews and news. Hit read more to see some of the gameplay videos I have uploaded to my YouTube Channel, showcasing the different courts and gameplay changes.

RED MC iff Editing Update Released for NBA 2K PC

Vl@d Zola Jr. has finally released his much anticipated update for his roster editing tool RED MC which now allows for iff editing. iff files are what contain all the information for NBA 2K games, and while we have had very useful tools for years, RED MC provides a more consistent and flexible editing experience. Texture resolution restrictions are no longer an issues and the specific parts of each file can be manipulated to mash multiple arenas together, change the size of sound effects, or swap animations around easily.

As with the other roster editing licenses of RED MC, there is a pay-for license with iff editing. Of note, there is now a split in licenses, offering a 1 year expiring license or a lifetime licenses. It is also important to know that iff files saved with RED MC can not be edited with other iff editing tools or hex editing.

You can get the new version of RED MC from Vl@d’s official topic in the NBA 2K14 Releases Forum. I have created 6 tutorials for the update as well, which you can check out here or by hitting Read More.

With the release of the iff editing update for RED MC, I can now release the full first version of my NBA Street 2K14 mod! The mod features 23 different street courts, including many variations of Rucker Park, custom crowds for Attack Athletics, and new crowds for the Practice Gym and Rooftop courts. I was also able to convert over the _lo quality versions of NBA 2K12 courts, which were originally from the PlayStation 2 versions of NBA 2K. Couple all these courts with custom uniforms from bigh0rt and R4zoR, and all the database edits I did from the “Early” version of the mod, and you get one complete street mod. And of course, like all the mods I made, this mod will not overwrite any of your original files and should work fine with any other mods you have installed.

You can get the mod from our Downloads Database, and be sure to check out the Release Thread as well. Hit Read More to see some gameplay videos I regularly upload to my YouTube channel.
